I am obsessed. The first time I noticed “Flora vs Stone” was December 2012. I was unprepared (and happy) for green grass in South Tipperary. It caught my attention immediately. But, what I was truly captivated by was the moss. It was everywhere … roads, roofs and walls.
In late September 2013, much of the flora was past its prime and the moss had not started its takeover, so Flora vs Stone went mostly unnoticed. However, in June 2014 … with a rainy early summer, followed by a couple of weeks of sunshine, Flora vs Stone was everywhere. And, at the time, it appeared that the ‘stone’ was losing.
What do I mean by everywhere? Plants seemed to grow off of any established, stone surface. This included ruins, bridges and walls. It spilled over to rocky paths and shorelines. What held my attention was the diversity of flora. At Glendalough, County Wicklow, ferns seem to thrive. Dunluce Castle, County Antrim, held the honors of having the widest variety of flowering plants of all colors.
When I returned home and began to review my photographs, it was clear that I had enough Flora vs Stone images to create a small album. I have been posting them periodically on Facebook and Twitter. Just when I think I am done, I find a few more.
