Monday was spent checking out a couple of castles. Our main goal was Cahir (pronounced care). Our confidence with the car was growing and since we did have all day … We drove on to Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir.
Sara and I managed to navigate, locate and find parking at Cahir Castle. It is one of the largest castles in Ireland and is located on the river Suir. It was built in the 13th century on top of an old stone fort. Also, it has one of the last working gates (below) … the last time it was used was in the movie Braveheart. It takes six seconds to close it and two days to open.

After a lunch downtown (outside and in the rain … We had awnings) we headed east. Our big obstacle for the day was the ‘three million’ roundabouts around Clonmel. Okay, maybe only a dozen … But by the time we drove back to Cashel, we had roundabouts figured out. Oh, we also drove by Bulmers and their manufacturing plant; our preferred beverage during our stay.
We hadn’t originally planned to go to Carrick-on-Suir. We had the time, were getting use to the car and so we continued that direction. Why not? We did a short walkthrough of Ormonde Castle. Built in 1315, the front portion or Manor (built in the 1500’s) is still standing; the original castle portion is in ruin.
