We accidently found Hore Abbey our first day in Ireland. We were looking for our bed and breakfast, but instead of turning right, I turned left. That was also the first of many ‘turnarounds’. I was the tempted to get out of the car, but were running on 30 hours without sleep. Our priority was the the B&B.
We forgot about Hore Abbey until the following Sunday. Once again I zigged when I should have zagged. This time we stopped briefly. We did get out of the car, but didn’t go any further. We were a bit apprehensive since the Abbey is located in someone’s cattle pasture. There was a placard providing historical information, as well as a cattle gate, but it didn’t feel right. Okay … In the United States it is called trespassing. A couple of photos later, we were heading north to Nenagh.
Visit three … Yes, we found our way back later that second week. This time it was planned. We found a little ‘layover’ to park the car, passed through the gate and headed to the Abbey.
If you are visiting the Rock of Cashel, Hore Abbey is the ruins that you see when looking out over the landscape. Built in the 13th century, it was only four centuries later that it began to fall to ruin. I must “see” if you are in the area.
